The start of winter sports season is right around the corner! Are you ready to participate? These 2 items are required for ALL STUDENT ATHLETES in order to play a sport at St. John Paul the Great:1. A fully completed VHSL sports physical (signed by parent, student-athlete, and physician) uploaded to the Athletic Trainer System (ATS). For more information on how to do this, click HERE2. Complete the Injury & Concussion Acknowledgement Form and electronically sign on Athletic Trainer System (ATS). These 2 additional items are ONLY for FRESHMAN, NEW TRANSFERS, and JUNIORS:3. Go to PaySimple to pay the $30 fee for an ImPact Concussion Baseline Test.4. Take the Computerized ImPact Concussion Baseline Test at school before strenuous exercise. JP Boys Win and Girls Second at Virginia State Catholic XC Championships
CoEd Varsity Cross CountryThe John Paul Cross Country team competed in the Virginia Catholic State Championships yesterday at Occoquan Regional Park in Lorton, VA. The boys team came away victorious by placing their top 7 runners in the top 12 places. Senior Brady Brennan led from the start and finished first in a time of 16:22 on the 5K course. Seniors Elijah Thompson (3th) and Austin Colvin (7th), Sophomore David Hurley (8th), and Juniors Jonah Berkey (9th), Louis Dobson (11th), and Jacob Thompson (12th) rounded out the top seven medal winners for the Wolves. This is the seventh consecutive Catholic States victory for the boys team. In the girls race, the JP team finished Runner-up in a competitive field of teams. The team was led by Seniors Erynn Spiegeler and Catherine Stoeter who finished 9th and 10th overall. Sophomore Alyssa McCoppin (18th), Juniors Gianna Albanese (21th) and Reese Almelor (23rd) rounded out the top five scorers for the girls. In the boys JV race

CoEd Varsity Cross CountryThe John Paul Cross Country team traveled down to North Carolina this past weekend to compete at the Great American XC Festival to compete against some of best teams on the east coast and came home with some great performances. In the Boys Race of Champions, Senior Brady Brennan finished 20th overall in a season best time of 15:20 on the 5k course which is also a new JP school record. Seniors Elijah Thompson and Austin Colvin, Sophomore David Hurley, and Juniors Louis Dobson, Jacob Thompson, and Jonah Berkey all set personal best times at this meet. In the girls red race, Catherine Stoeter finished in 18th place with a personal best time. Senior Erynn Spiegeler and Junior Reese Almelor set PRs as well. Congratulations to Catherine and Brady and the entire team on a successful weekend of racing. The team is back in action this Tuesday with a home meet and opportunity to recognize our seniors.

CoEd Varsity Cross CountryThe John Paul Cross Country team traveled to Burke Lake Park this past Saturday to compete in the Monroe Parker Invitational Cross Country Meet. In the Boys Varsity Race, the Wolf Harriers finished in 5th place overall and were the first non-public school. Leading the boys team to this highest place ever were Seniors Elijah Thompson and Austin Colvin who finished in 25th and 29th place overall. Juniors Louis Dobson and Jacob Thompson and Sophomore David Hurley rounded out the top five scores for the Wolves. In the Girls Varsity Race, the Lady Wolves finished in 19th, an improvement upon last year’s finish, and were led by Senior Catherine Stoeter and Sophomore Alyssa McCoppin who finished in 59th and 78th overall. Juniors Gianna Albanese and Margaret Dake and Senior Virginia Holloway rounded out the top 5 scores for the Lady Wolves. Girls Varsity LacrosseThe girls varsity lacrosse team finished their season as the VCAC regular season champions and proceeded to win the VCAC tournament for the second year in a row! Junior Meghan Norko was named conference Player of the Year! We had three first team all conference players: Deidre Sanchez (9th grade), Julia Foster (10th grade) and Catalina O'Connor (11th grade). Additionally, two players were named 2nd team all conference: Isabella Koler (10th grade) and Emilie Lytle (12th grade). Way to go Wolves!

CoEd Varsity Track(May 18, 2024) The John Paul Track and Field team competed at the VISAA State Championships this past Saturday in Richmond and came away with two State Champions. In the girls 400m, Chichi Obasi won in a time of 57.62, after earlier in the day finishing second in the girls long jump. The boys 4x400m relay team of Alex Everson, Gabe Xantus, Toby Obasi, and Armaan Dhillon secured the victory in a school record time of 3:27.30. Other All-State performances were turned in by Isobella Jameson’s second place finish in the girls discus and third place finish of the girls 4x800m relay team of Tegan Bechtel, Missy Petras, Alyssa McCoppin, and Catherine Stoeter. CoEd Varsity Track(Saturday May 11, 2024) The John Paul the Great Track and Field Teams competed in the Virginia State Catholic Track and Field Championships at Paul IV High School this past Saturday with the Boys team taking the victory and the girls finishing third. The boys were led by victories in the Discus by Luke Kovac with a school record throw of 131-6, Jonah Bereky in the Triple Jump, and the 4x800m relay team of Alex Everson, Ethan Garcia, Matthew Elliott, and Jacob Thompson. Second place finishes by Chino Nnamani in the Discus and Shot Put, Armaan Dhillon in the High Jump, 400m, and 200m, Gabe Xantus in the 100m, Elijah Thompson in the 1600, Gus Horward in the 800, and James Bertram in the 3200m contributed greatly to the team’s overall win. CoEd Varsity TrackThe John Paul Track and Field team competed at the 41st Annual Draper Track & Field Invitational at the St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School this past weekend. The Boys team finished first out of 21 teams which was a first in school history. The team was led by first places finishes from Elijah Thompson in the boys 1600m run in a time of 4:29 and the 4x800m relay team of Ethan Garcia, Jacob Thompson, James Bertram, and Alex Everson; second place finishes by Armaan Dhillon in 400m with a new school record time of 50.66 and the 4x400m relay team of Alex Everson, Toby Obasi, Gus Howard, and Armaan Dhillon. CoEd Varsity Indoor TrackThe John Paul 4x800m relay team completed at the New Balance Nationals this past weekend setting a new school record in the process. The relay team of Juniors Elijah Thompson and Nick Bouril, Sophomore Alex Everson, and Senior Gus Howard won their section in a time of 8:04.09 to place them 25th overall out of 75 teams. Bouril’s split of 2:01.19 and Howard’s split of 1:58.78 were personal best times for the 800m and the school’s first time competing in this national meet. CoEd Varsity Indoor Track(Feb 20) The John Paul Indoor Track team traveled to NYC to run at the Historic Armory in the Eastern States Championships and walked away with some spectacular performances. In the boys 4x800m relay the team of Elijah Thompson, Nick Bouril, Alex Everson, and Gus Howard set a new school record time of 8:04.48 breaking the one set just last weekend by almost 10 seconds. This time also qualified the team for New Balance Nationals next month. In the boys 4x400m relay, the team of Armaan Dhillion, Nick Bouril, Alex Everson, and Gus Howard finished in 6th place with a new school record time of 3:26.28. The girls 4x400m relay team of Catalina O'Connor, Camila Barrera-Castro, Isobella Jameson, and Chichi Obasi finished in 5th place with a season best time of 4:09.24. CoEd Varsity Indoor Track(Feb 17, 2024) The John Paul Indoor Track team traveled to Richmond on Saturday to compete in the VISAA State Championships on the campus of St Christopher School and had some outstanding performances. The meet started with the Boys 4x800m relay team of Elijah Thompson, Matthew Elliott, Alex Everson, and Gus Howard winning in a school record time of 8:13.88. The meet finished with the boys 4x400m relay team of Nick Bouril, Tobi Obasi, Everson, and Howard winning in a school record time of 3:32.10. Both teams achieved first team All State. Bouril’s third place finish in the 500m in a school record time of 1:06.90 earned him Honorable Mention All-State. Girls Varsity BasketballAfter losing to the St. Catherine's Saints the last time they met, the Saint John Paul the Great Catholic Wolves decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. Saint John Paul the Great Catholic took down the Saints 50-34 on Friday. Saint John Paul the Great Catholic's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Nina Velandria, who scored 21 points along with four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Saleema Tinner, who scored 13 points along with five steals. Saint John Paul the Great Catholic's win bumped their record up to 9-10. As for St. Catherine's, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-7.
