JP Boys Track Win Virginia State Catholic Championship for Second Year in a Row; Girls Runner Up

(Saturday May 10, 2025) The John Paul the Great Track and Field Teams competed in the Virginia State Catholic Track and Field Championships at Paul IV High School this past Saturday with the Boys team taking the victory and the girls finishing second. The boys were led by victories in the Discus by Luke Kovac with a throw of 135-0,Chino Nnamani in the Shot put with a school record throw of 44-11.5, Elijah Thompson in the 1600m in a school record time of 4:23.57, Brady Brennan in the 3200m, and the 4x400m relay team of Izaiah Wingfield, Brogan Jordan, Nick Bouril, and Gabe Xantus. Second place finishes by Jonah Berkey in the Long Jump, Armaan Dhillon in the 400m in a school record time of 47.85, Elijah Thompson in the 800m, Austin Colvin in the 3200m contributed greatly to the team’s overall win. Other medal winners for the boys included Armaan Dhillon in the 100m and 200m, Toby Obasi in the Shot Put, Caleb Klaye in the Long Jump, Chino Nnamani in the Discus, the 4x100m relay team of Logan Inthavong, Izaiah Wingfield, Caleb Klaye, and Toby Obasi, and the 4x800m relay team of Ethan Garcia, Beimnet Derege, Nick Bouril, and Andrew Bouril. On the girls side, victories by Angielina Kovac in the Discus and the Shot Put, the 4x800 relay team of Margaret Dake, Erynn Spiegeler, Gianna Albanese, Melissa Petras, and Chichi Obasi in the 400m and 200m led the team. Second place finishes by Chichi Obasi in the 100m, Long Jump, and Shot Put and Alyssa McCoppin in the 3200m contributed greatly to the team totals. Third place finishes by Erynn Spiegeler in the 3200m, Missy Petras in the 800m, and Audrey Pham in the Long Jump contributed some crucial points as well. Chichi Obasi was named Female Athlete of the Meet for Running Events based on her two victories and second place finishes, Angielina Kovac was named Female Athlete of the meet for Field Events for her two victories, and Chino Nnamani was named Male Athlete of the meet for Field Events for his first and third place finishes.
Overall the team saw many personal best times and performances at this meet. Congratulations to the John Paul Track and Field Team on these great accomplishments. The team will compete next Saturday at the VISAA State Championships in Richmond.

Thompson and Three Relay Teams set School Records at Draper Invite

The John Paul Track and Field team competed at the 42nd Annual Draper Invitational this past weekend on the Campus of St Stephen and St Agnes School in Alexandria, VA and came away with some fantastic performances and several school records. In the boys 4x200m relay, the team of Brogan Jordan, Anthony Fratantonio, Khae'El Williams, and Beimnet Derege set a new school record in this event. In the boys 4x100m relay, the team of Logan Inthavong, Armaan Dhillon, Jonah Berkey, and Gabriel Xantus ran 43.43 to set a new school record and finished in second place. In one of the most exciting relays of the day, the boys 4x400m relay, the team of Alexander Everson, Gabriel Xantus, Andrew Bouril, and Armaan Dhillon finished second in a new school record time of 3:20.62 with Armaan Dhillon running a 46.06 400m split on the anchor leg to just miss first place by fractions of a second. The highlight of the day was the boys 800m run with Elijah Thompson running 57 seconds for the last lap to run 1:56.74 to win the race in a new school record time for this event. In the field events, Angelina Kovac won the Girls Discus with a throw of 126-9 and Jonah Berkey jumped 20-10.5 in the boys long jump to finish in second place. Additional personal best performances were turned in by Eberechi Obasi in the 200m and 400m, Margaret Dake in the 800m, Elizabeth Marcy in the 200m, Alyssa McCoppin in the 1600m, Reese Almelor in the 3200m, Andrew Bouril in the Freshman Mile, Brogan Jordan in the 400m, David Hurley in the 3200m, Ethan Garcia and Khae'El Williams in the 300M hurdles, and Alex Picardo in the 110m hurdles. Congratulations to the John Paul Track and Field Team on a great weekend of performances. The team is back in action this Saturday to compete at the Virginia Catholic State Championships.
