Biography:

Coach Velandria has been with the JPG Girls Varsity basketball program since 2020, as both an assistant and Head Coach. However, his coaching career started as a CYO volleyball coach from 1992-1998 for both boys and girls.  He switched over to basketball in 2002 & 2003, coaching CYO Boys Basketball before slowly tranisitioning to a full-time girls coach.  He was with the Springfield Youth Club Boys & Girls Basketball Program in 2006 & 2017-2019 as both an assistant and Head coach, then as an assistant Coach for The Machine, Fairfax Stars, and Shots UP AAU basketball programs from 2017-2022.  In addition to his time here at JPG, he has been the Head coach at St. Thomas Aquinas Varsity Girls Basketball program, 2019-2020 & present.

Coach Washington has been coaching three different sports for over 25yrs:  basketball, football, and softball. He has coached in the Greater Manassas Football League (GMFL), and was an assistant coach to his alma mater, Osbourn High School, where he helped coach them to a State Championship over Chantilly in 2006. Many players from that championship team started with Coach Washington in the GMFL when they were 6yrs of age.

Coach Washington, himself, started on the varsity football team at Osbourn High School as a sophomore and went on to play at the next level at Saint Paul’s College as a defensive back.

His philosophy for coaching any sport is to prepare his players for the real world; to let them know how you prepare for sports, and how you conduct yourself while playing sports, are how you will conduct yourself in daily life.  He challenges each athlete to grow in character in the true spirit of St. John Paul the Great.
