The recently completed Fall 21’ Athletics Season proved to be a historic one for the Saint John Paul Athletic program. With multiple team and individual awards being accomplished none of which was more significant than the Boys Cross Country Team winning the 1st ever John Paul state title!
The boys cross country team coached by Mr. Jim Garster completed a tremendous season with a stunning performance in the VISAA state championships on November 11th at Pole Green Park. “I knew we had a chance if we ran well” said Coach Garster prior to the race, they did indeed run well, with 5 runners finishing in the top 20 giving Saint John Paul its first ever State Championship in its short 13 year history. Sean Alorro led the Wolves finishing in 5th place with a 16:46 time, he was joined by James Beltram, Matthew Elliott, Ben Moloko and Xander Fry. On the girls side, Sarah Dake had a solid showing finishing in 13th place with a time of 20:43. In addition Sarah Dake earned All-State with her 13th position finish! A huge congratulations to Coach Garster, Thompson and the entire JP Cross Country Team.
Being the first season that Saint John Paul competed in the Virginia Christian Athletic Conference there were many other awards gathered from the hard working teams in the fall. The boys soccer finished in 1st place in the conference and won the VCAC tournament by defeating Seton school 7-4 in the championship game. The teams tough schedule and solid efforts throughout the season earned them a spot in the VISAA state playoffs where the lost a close game 1-2 vs St. Stephens St. Agnes. Kirubel George was named to 2nd team All State Team. Coach Jesse was named Coach of The Year in the VCAC.
Finally, Anna Kate Domingue was named Player of the Year for the VCAC field hockey season. Anna Kate was also nominated to the VISAA All State 2nd Team. The player of the year award was unanimous as voted by the other coaches in the VCAC. Anna Kate is the first Saint John Paul the Great Field Hockey player to sign to play Field Hockey at the NCAA Division 1 level as she will be attending Northeastern University.
JP will say goodbye to many seniors from our fall teams who have been with John Paul their entire high school career. We offer our thanks for all their hard work, dedication and leadership these last few years and wish them well when they depart John Paul!
