Winter 2020 Athletics Plan

After much discussion and prayer, Saint John Paul the Great has decided upon the following plan for the 2020 Winter sports season. Each sport will have a staged approach to the season. Those stages will begin with outdoor conditioning and gradually move through limited and restricted practices with the goal of playing competitions. The specifics for each sport will be communicated through each coach. A summary of the sports plan is below.

  • Football will be played in the late Winter into early spring season. Official practices will begin on February 1st with workouts continuing until that time. If games are able to be played they will occur from the last week of February through March
  • Cheer will be pushed to the late Winter/early Spring season to correspond with the football season. It will an outdoor sideline cheer for the football season. Practices will begin after 1/15/2020.

  • Basketball will be played in the normal Winter season from mid-November through mid-February. The season will progress in stages with tryouts starting on November 16th.

  • Indoor Track will compete in the normal Winter season ending in February with all activities being outside until further notice. Practices will begin on November 16.

  • Swimming will occur in the normal Winter season from November 9th through February.

  • Wrestling will have an adjusted Winter season focusing on individual skill development with the possibility for intramural contests. Competition against other schools will be evaluated later in the season.

  • At this time only the winter sports will engage in workouts and activities.

  • Decisions about Spring sports will be made at a later time.

 Summary of Rules and Requirements:

  • All students-athletes must have a current physical on file before they will be allowed to participate in any workouts and/or practices.

  • All student-athletes must complete a baseline Impact Test through the office of our Athletic Trainer, Miss Annemarie Francis.

  • Students who do not adhere to rules for safety, particularly physical distancing and face covering requirements will not be allowed to participate.

  • All student-athletes will be required to complete a daily pre-activity health screening before engaging in any athletic activities.

  • Only students enrolled in the Blended/Hybrid model are eligible to participate in athletic activities on the days they are studying in the building.

  • Further policies and procedures will be communicated through the individual teams.

We believe in the importance of athletics for the development of our students. In addition we want to provide our students with a safe environment for play and competition. We are committed to the care and safety of students-athletes, coaches and entire Saint John Paul the Great Community.
